Event Details

ivan_milev_300The 9th ANNUAL Saints KIRIL & METHODY FESTIVAL. The MEGA PARTY of the BG MAY 2009 Festivities May 16 3PM - Midnight

Featuring: The IVAN MILEV BAND openning  the boundaries for an amazing journey into the depths of Bulgarian and Balkan music.  A musical genius and legendary performer, accordionist IVAN MILEV, has established the rules that govern Bulgarian Folk Music throughout his 30-plus year career.
Ivan is an accordionist of incredible virtuosity and technique, and his vision of combining multiple ethnic styles has produced tunes with daring key changes and dizzying tempos.  Battling solos between the veteran accordionist and his apprentice, violinist ENTCHO TODOROV, deliver energizing performances of Bulgarian and Balkan folk music. The soothing but powerful voice of Maria Koleva vitalizes the spirit of every song.
IVAN MILEV BAND is the vision of two musical talents and two friends, Ivan and Entcho, that see the potential of Balkan music extending far from the Eastern European region and thrilling audiences from different cultures and musical backgrounds around the world.

IVAN MILEV (accordion) - Ivan Milev is a landmark of contemporary Balkan folk music. His style fuses tunes of classical, jazz, Eastern European and Middle Eastern music. The founder of legendary bands in Bulgaria, Milev defined the famous wedding music culture in the Balkan region through the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. He shaped the talent of many performers of ethno music - Yuri Yanakov, Osman, Vasil Angelov, etc. Currently Milev has captured one of the most critical audiences - New York music scene. His powerful playing and most intricate arrangements have impressed many among which the 11-Grammy winner Michael Brecker, jazz saxophone.

ENTCHO TODOROV (violin) -- Bulgarian violinist Entcho Todorov is an accomplished classical musician, playing everything from Brahms to Broadway. He was the Fiddle on the Roof and is the consummate solo violin in Chita Rivera.Entcho had aspired to master Balkan folk music but it was not until he collaborated with the legend of Eastern European folk music, Ivan Milev, when he devoted his playing to the genre. Their success as a duo led to the creation of Ivan Milev Band.

Also playing will be BEBELEKOV 100 KABA GROUP,  Orchestra SALI & RUMEN SHOPOV, VERNA DRUJINA Band, COPE FAMILY band, DA MOJEM Band, KITKA Women’s choir, & GRADINA performing group,

Food by HRISTOS KOLEV.

The Bulgarian community gathers at the Croatian American Cultural Center to celebrate their culture, and honor the Saints Kiril & Methody. There is Bulgarian music, dancing, and delicious samples of Bulgarian food and wine. It is a day of appreciation for all art, science and knowledge. There are garlands of flowers woven by children, and bread is shared with all. Artists from neighboring cultures are invited to join.
