Sts Kiril & Methody Bulgarian Festival & MAY CELEBRATION of BULGARIAN CULTURE 5/9 - 5/31

Event Details

ludi_mladi_300The Bulgarian community gathers at the Croatian American Cultural Center to celebrate their culture, and honor the Saints Kiril & Methody. There is Bulgarian music, dancing, and delicious samples of Bulgarian food and wine. It is a day of appreciation for all art, science and knowledge. There are garlands of flowers woven by children, and bread is shared with all. Artists from neighboring cultures are invited to join.

Special guests of the Festival will be Radostina Koneva and Orchestra LUDI MALDI from Las Vegas in the Bay Area for the first time. Radostina is one of Bulgaria's leading Thracian style singers. Other members of the band are; Angel Gadzhev, gadulka, vocal: Zhelyazko Georgiev, gaida, vocal; Kristian Aleksandrov, keybord, kaval; Lubomir Trifonov, kaval; and guest Rumen Sali Shopov, percussionist, tambura, vocal

2. WOMEN'S DANCE WORKSHOP at the Albany Senior Center, 8467 Masonic, at Solano Avenue

From Catherine Suton:
Tanya Kostova, professional Bulgarian folkdancer and ethnographer, will bring her grace and special insight to our regular women's class, as part of the May Celebration of Bulgarian Culture in the SF/Bay Area. She will teach two dances that are special to this time of year in Bulgaria: a dance that she helped to re-discover, Rasvivai Dobro, once performed ritually every St George's Day, as well as a dance I saw performed in the village of Voiynyagovo on the day after St George's Day in 2006. St George's Day marks the beginning of summer and is celebrated in the first week of May.
The cost is $7 ($6 for Albany residents)

From Bulgaria, a land famous for its beautiful mountains and rich tradition of  dance, Paneurhythmy has made it all the way to California, where it has been practiced faithfully since the early 1990's. 
Paneurhythmy is music and dance that is spiritual practice and prayer.  Its composer from Bulgaria Peter Deunov (Beinsa Douno), was a great spiritual teacher of the early 20th century. Since the end of the communist rule in Bulgaria, several thousand people gather every summer from all over the world, high upin the Rila Mountains, to dance together in alpine meadows

5. SLAVIC CONCERT WITHOUT BORDERS

An Evening of Slavic Classical and Traditional Chamber Music
 
When: May 24th, SATURDAY, 8.00pm
Where: The Hillside Club in Berkeley, 2286 Cedar St, Berkeley

Please join us for a rich evening combining pan-Slavic classical and
traditional chamber music. This concert will transcend the borders of
nationality and musical genre. You will be transported
by interpretations of traditional songs and romances by Slavic
composers, sung and played by young Slavic classical musicians, by
the full tones of the Russian Vocal Group, and, to bring the concert to
a resounding close, Vassil and Maria Bebelekovi on Bulgarian gaida and
voice. A glass of Bulgarian wine and fine food at the end will complete
the evening and we'll return home with more friends.

The Concert features:

for May's festivities of Bulgarian Culture and Slavic Script in
California from AMTII Plovdiv, Bulgaria.

Bulgarian violinist Emanuela Nikiforova began her violin and music studies at age 4 and a half. First she studied in her home town Varna's music school, then in Sofia, then in the International Menuhin Music Academy in Switzerland. Before continuing her studies in the US, she played in the 1st violin sections of  Orqhuesta Filharmonica de Buenos Aires and Camerata Bariloche for a year.
After that she graduated from at LSU(BM) and San Francisco Conservatory of Music(MM). Currently she is a member of four Bay Area orchestras in Berkeley, Oakland, Marin and Santa Rosa, and also a substitute at the San Francisco Symphony.
Emanuela has been performing as a soloist and in chamber groups in Bulgaria, Switzerland, Germany, Argentina, Louisiana and California. She has had the honor to perform on the Heifetz's Guarnieri "Del Jesu" violin at the SF Legion of Honor.


mariya_300Mariya Borozina, who has received her Bachelor of Music degree at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, and a Masters or Music degree at the Manhattan School of Music in New York, has performed extensively as a chamber and orchestral musician, including the Vainberg String Quartet and M-Trio in Moscow. She has performed as Concertmaster with a number of orchestras, namely The UBS Verbier Youth Festival Orchestra, the Manhattan School of Music Symphony, The Moscow Composer’s Union Chamber Orchestra, and the International Orchestra Institute Attergau. She has performed as a soloist with several of these orchestras, and was also a finalist of the Carmel Music Society Competition, California. Currently, Mariya Borozina is a member of the San Francico Ballet and Opera Orchestras, and performs with the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony. She is actively engaged in a solo and chamber music career,  performing with various chamber groups around the San Francisco Bay Area and in Europe.


alexander_230Baritone Alexander Zeyliger was born in St.Petersburg, Russia. There
he attended a music school from the age of 6.  He graduated from
California Institute of Technology where he was a member and soloist with the Caltech Glee Club and Chamber Singers while also studying Physics. A student of Frieda Bernstein since 1995, Mr. Zeyliger performed opera arias, German lieder, and Russian romances in several recitals in the South Bay and Pasadena. In his spare time, he
is a software engineer for a Silicon Valley start-up.


Irina Behrendt was born in Kaliningrad, Russia and moved to the US in 1998. She holds Masters of Music degree from the Petrozavodsk State Conservatory (Petrozavodsk, Russia) and a Graduate Diploma from the New England Conservatory of Music (Boston, MA). Being a daughter of a composer, Irina has always been interested in new music and throughout her student career always used an opportunity to learn and perform music of the student composers. She has collaborated with her father, Simon Bokman, many times learning and editing his new compositions, as well as translating into English his new book, Variations on the Theme Galina Ustvolskaya, published in Berlin by Verlag Ernst Kuhn  in December 2006. Currently, Irina is teaching piano at the New Mozart School of Music (Palo Alto, CA) as well as maintaining a small private studio, and taking care of two little children; Arianna (3), and Daniel (1).

old ritual (sleeping over in a monastery, a church or under sacred trees - reconnecting
with God, Universe, Nature.)

This is an antique and unique ritual for well - being and health with music, stories,
candles and a vigil, blessings and music and dance again.
Preparing ritual food together and sleeping over is encouraged as it is a main part of the
old ritual (sleeping over in a monastery, a church or under sacred trees - reconnecting
with God, Universe, Nature.)
